Whilst this year’s Armed Forces Day events in Ross-on-Wye on Saturday 26th June have been postponed to 2022 due to the pandemic, Ross Town Council have confirmed that the official Flag Raising on Monday 21st June, will still go ahead as planned at the Market House.

In attendance will be The Mayor of Ross-on-Wye, Cllr John Winder; The President of Ross-on-Wye RBL, Major Patrick Darling; The Chairman of Ross-on-Wye RBL, Graham Aplin; RBL Standard Bearer of Ross-on-Wye RBL, Derek Griffiths; Bugler, Des Auld (provided by Ross-on-Wye RBL); Ian Hedges, Branch Advice Chairman, RBL and the Military Representative, Lt Col I R Gumm (R WELSH, ACF, Retd).

Graham Aplin, Chairman of the Ross on Wye & District Branch of The Royal British Legion commented: “In RBL’s centenary year, we are naturally disappointed that we have had to postpone our Armed Forces Day events, however, we hope the flag-raising service on Monday will provide an opportunity for us to reflect on the charity’s achievements over the last century and honour the work of the UK’s brave service men and women, past and present. The RBL is very grateful for the support of its volunteers, members, fundraisers, and corporate partners who are all dedicated to bringing people together to support, commemorate and celebrate our Armed Forces community.”

Since 1921, the Royal British Legion has been supporting the Armed Forces community, creating better futures for them and their families. The aim of the RBL is to ensure that the unique contribution of the Armed Forces community is never forgotten and that individuals are enabled to live fulfilled lives. More information on the RBL’s activities and events can be found online at www.britishlegion.org.uk.

As part of the Armed Forces week activities, Ross-on-Wye Town Council will also be holding a shop window-dressing competition for local traders and are encouraging as many as possible to get involved to show their support. The seating area under the Market House will be a focal point during the week, where there will also be a charity collection available for the British Legion.
