Weather fails to dampen opening home game
Ross Cricket was affected by the un-August like weather on the weekend. The seconds fixture at Glangrwyney was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, leaving the focus on the Firsts’ opening home game of the shortened season.
Stu Mair and his team had put a lot of effort into getting the pitch at Wilton match ready in the wet weather leading up to Saturday afternoon; followed by repetitive drizzle throughout the game. There was no surprise that Canon Frome elected to bowl and they made regular inroads into the Ross batting line up, wickets falling almost every ten runs as the Ross players struggled with the conditions and the frustration of not being able to score quick runs. Andrews Bevan and Tingle topped scored with just 18 and 17 respectively, leaving the lower order to stay in to use the 40 overs up, albeit at a very low run rate, finishing on a score of 93-9 that included only four boundaries.
The Ross bowling attack were keen to put the pressure on Canon Frome as much as possible, Adam Davies bowling a quick opening spell of 5-2-13-2, his pace being too much for the batmen, as well as, unfortunately, for the slip fielders that put three catches down. Si Timewell, normally the second team keeper, held on to two catches in a tidy display, but the crowds were awed by two one handed catches; first at short midwicket by Bevan, then a spectacular full length diving grab at mid on by Davies who could not believe the ball had stayed in his hand. Unfortunately the target of 94 was too small to defend, and Frome reached their goal with four wickets and 13 overs in hand. Ross, sponsored by Now Storage, were pleased that the game was close, and all commented on the positive team spirit in this local derby.
