Schools will start to open on 1st June

In a briefing to the nation this evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that primary schools in England will reopen from 1st June for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 – with secondary schools “providing some contact” for Year 10/12 students from 15th June.
He said: “The education of children is crucial for their welfare, for their long-term future and for social justice.
“In line with the approach being taken in many other countries, we want to start getting our children back into the classroom in a way that is as manageable and as safe as possible.
“We said we would begin with early years’ settings and reception, year 1, and year 6 in primary schools.
“Today, I can announce it is our intention to go ahead with that as planned on June 1st, a week on Monday. We then intend from June 15th for secondary schools to provide some contact for year 10 and year 12 students to help them to prepare for exams next year, with up to a quarter of these students in at any point.”
He also said: “I acknowledge that a 1st June opening may not be possible for all schools, but the government will continue to support the sector.”
