Ross Regatta cancelled due to low river levels
Ross-on-Wye Regatta, which was due to take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, has been cancelled due to low river levels on the Wye.
Following weeks of dry weather, and a drought being officially declared in some areas of the UK, River levels on the Wye have dropped significantly with current readings (6pm 14th August) showing a level of just 9 cms in Ross-on-Wye.
In a statement Ross Rowing Club said: “It is with regret and disappointment that we have to inform you that Ross Regatta 2022, 28-29 August, is cancelled. This decision has been made due to the exceptionally low water levels in the River Wye, and the lack of any significant rainfall predicted over the next few weeks.
“The cancellation is unprecedented and the Regatta Committee has done everything it possibly could to allow the event to proceed. However, with the low water levels on the river and the forecast August heatwave, it would be unsafe for us to allow competition on such a small amount of water.
“We appreciate that this is not news you wanted to hear, but we have looked into every possibility to still hold the regatta, but regrettably all efforts have failed.
“Cancelling two weeks before allows you all to make alternative plans for the August Bank Holiday weekend. We will ensure that any entry fees paid will be refunded.
“We are sorry to disappoint, and look forward to seeing you on the water for Ross Regatta, August Bank Holiday weekend, 2023.”
