Plastic straws, cotton buds and coffee stirrers have been banned in England from today in a bid to tackle single-use plastic pollution.

The ban was announced in 2018 and was due to come into affect in April this year, but was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

From 1st October it will be illegal for businesses to supply plastic straws, stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds to customers.

An exemption will allow hospitals, bars and restaurants to provide plastic straws to people with disabilities or medical conditions that require them.

A number of businesses had already stopped using plastic straws before the ban was announced.

Officials say an estimated 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds were being used in England each year.
