The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide citizen science survey aimed at helping to assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies. Over 113,500 citizen scientists took part in 2019, submitting 116,009 counts of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK.

The Big Butterfly Count begins today, with people being asked to spend 15 minutes in a park, garden, field or wood, counting the common butterflies they see.

You can download the free app or printable ID chart by visiting http://bigbutterflycount.org

The Big Butterfly Count 2020 runs from Friday 17th July to Sunday 9th August.
