£1.57bn coronavirus lifeline for the arts is promised by government

Yesterday evening, Sunday 5th July, the Government announced a £1.57 billion rescue package to help cultural, arts and heritage institutions weather the impact of coronavirus.
However, there are fears that many theatres, concert halls and other venues may not re-open until next summer, which would mean them remaining closed through Christmas.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “From iconic theatre and musicals, mesmerising exhibitions at our world-class galleries to gigs performed in local basement venues, the UK’s cultural industry is the beating heart of this country.”
He added: “This money will help safeguard the sector for future generations, ensuring arts groups and venues across the UK can stay afloat and support their staff whilst their doors remain closed and curtains remain down.”
The Courtyard Hereford tweeted: “Now THIS is the news we’ve been waiting for. The next step to cultural recovery is on the horizon. We can’t wait to work with artists, creatives and our community again to heal, reconnect and be inspired. Excellent news for an industry we are proud to be a part of.”
